Centipede

Centipede grass is a slow-growing, lush grass that requires little in the way of mowing or maintenance. Its light-green color is characteristic of Southern lawns, and its aggressive spread maintains a carpet-like lushness and stifles weed growth.

The slow growth of this grass means that mowing becomes less of an issue even in peak months, and fertilization is also minimal for the rest of the year. Centipede grass takes full sun well, but is vulnerable to heavy foot traffic, making this choice ideal for commercial properties.

Empire Zoysia is an excellent warm-weather grass, tolerant to full sun and drought as well as the occasional cold snap. It quickly spreads across the maximum available area, and roots and blades recover from wear in short order.

Tall Fescue

Tall Fescue is a hardy, long-lived grass that suits most growing conditions in the southeastern United States. Despite being cool-season and suitable for partial shade, it is highly resistant to higher temperatures and open sun. Its blue-green color and ease of maintenance are so attractive that Tall Fescue turf is used on the White House South Lawn.

Tall Fescue has a very deep root system that propagates soon after turf is laid, and this makes the grass highly resistant to drought. Widely adaptable, this is an excellent choice for lawns where low maintenance is key.

Tifway 419 Bermuda

Another Bermuda hybrid, Tifway 419 Bermuda grass looks similar to our other Bermuda hybrids: it is soft and colorful, with the ability to stand up to wear in high-traffic areas. This appeal makes Tifway 419 Bermuda grass a suitable choice for lawns, sports fields, and golf courses.

Tifway 419 Bermuda grass also performs similar to other Bermuda hybrids, being heat and disease resistant, and it flourishes in full sun. What makes this hybrid distinct from others is its particular resistance to drought, with a root system that extends beyond 6' below the ground surface.

Don't forget that birds will eat seeds before they take root - like these wild cockatoos on an Australian lawn.

Turf vs. Seed

Perhaps the most obvious advantage that turf grass can offer over seeds is the time it takes to a new lawn: seeds can take weeks to grow in fully, whereas turf grass is grown here at the farm. Though we at Macon Turf Farm don't install turf ourselves, you can Contact Us and we'll be happy to put you in touch with any landscaping professional who can suit your needs.

Another distinct advantage of turf use is the security it offers to owners worried for their lawns. You can see the grass before purchase, making sure that the color, texture, etc. is just right. Since seed has to be spread in a certain way, over specially-prepared soil, a turf lawn requires fewer steps to a beautiful lawn - which means fewer opportunities for error!
